— a bamboo fence, torn and replaced in turns by the guardsmen of both families, separates their territories. on the night of the full moon, he would meet rosita and her maidservants at the end of the fence.
— one day, the fence is moved by the guardsmen of balintawak further into the gagalangin lands. delfin's father demands that the territory line be properly restored, but rosita's father insists that it is now in the correct place, as intended by their ancestors. both sides prepare for war, but as the battle nears, delfin's father falls gravely ill and passes away. delfin becomes the new datu, but being mild-mannered and inexperienced in war, he hesitates to pursue the path of violence. rosita's father has no such reservations, however.
— delfin is fatally wounded in the battle. he instructs his soldiers to bury his body next to the wall, near the secret passage where he used to meet rosita. in the aftermath of the war, rosita also falls ill, and she requests that she be buried next to delfin. years later, jasmine is found growing over their grave mounds.
